Promotes the cause of career-readiness, mentoring and scholarships for children
The Leadership & Professional Development Award is presented to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omicron Theta Omega Chapter for its exemplary work in partnership with Mathews-Dickey to promote the cause of career-readiness, mentoring and scholarships for children on programs like The Sky is the Limit, Sheer Elegance and annual Teen Summit. The honor will be accepted by Chapter President Jan Sanders-Smith on stage at the Martin L. Mathews Awards Program & Benefit Concert during Mathews-Dickey’s Family Reunion Weekend.
Since its inception in 1984, Omicron Theta Omega has addressed quality education as a programmatic activity beginning with its first community forum on education- “Education Reform: Equity for Black Children” as well as participation in school bond issues and tax campaigns.
Believing the future lies in youth we established a relationship with Mathews Dickey Boy’s Club in 1987 with involvement in a program presentation for the initiating girl’s activities, development of an alcohol and drug abuse program for middle school students and a workshop based on the Teen Pregnancy Project. Our continued relationship has included involvement with Sky Is The Limit and Sheer Elegance programs along with the development of the “Fighting 4 Your Future” Youth Summit in 2013. The chapter also diligently works to prepare and empower young people through sorority programs such as Emerging Young Leaders and ASCEND.
