Christmas Time at Mathews-Dickey: Parties, Toys for Tots, Adopted Families and Lots of Shopping

Christmas Time at Mathews-Dickey

SLPS Party, Macy’s Shopping, Toys for Tots, Adopt-A-Family and Cardinals Care

Throughout the year Mathews-Dickey hosts dozens of events and helps hundreds of families. But the Christmas season at MDBGC is an especially generous one featuring multiple holiday parties with toys, wish lists, warm clothing and more to families in need and deserving children. In 2016 MDBGC has served hundreds of St. Louis area families and 1,264 individuals. Here’s a recap of a joyous season.

Big Hug with Santa

St. Louis Public Schools Christmas Party

For several years now, the family of David Joseph McKay IV has supported the SLPS Christmas Party hosted by Mathews-Dickey. This year’s event included a special treat, an original play titled “Santa B. Cause” written by alumnus Diamond Gladney and performed by youth members of the club. This party hosts an average of 1,000 SLPS students each year, rotating which schools attend the party. It’s a field trip that the students along with the teachers and administrators eagerly await. Each student receives a goody bag and entry into a raffle for one of 17 bikes and 15 $50 gift cards that were given away this year.

Toys for Tots

For the past two years Mathews-Dickey has benefitted from a Toys for Tots donation from the Salvation Army. Over 100 families receive three items from their “wish list” submitted to Santa (through the MD branch of the North Pole) months before. This year, it was made into an all out party with snacks and refreshments, an appearance by Santa himself sponsored by Paul Cerame Auto Group. Families give back to their community by taking part in the Red Cross Blood Drive hosted by member Krista Young.

Macy’s Winter Shopping

Each year in early December, several Mathews-Dickey staff member spend an entire day – sometimes two – shopping for lists of dozens of children and hand selecting items in their size and style from Macy’s department store. This shopping spree, sponsored by August A. Busch III, provides much-needed warm winter clothing to over 100 families.

Adopt-A-Families were sponsored individually by Clayco,  DHR International, David Owens, Lange-Stegmann, and St. Louis Chive and Combat Vets Motorcycle Association. For families in need, the Adopt-A-Family program is a way for companies and individuals to give back, taking some of the burden off during the holidays by providing presents for the whole family.

Cardinals Care Party at Busch Stadium

While the rest of MDBGC festivities took place on site, one special celebration was held at Busch Stadium sponsored by Cardinals Care. Children were treated to a bevy of surprises including: hot chocolate, cupcakes, gifts, autographs from former players, pictures with santa and former players, and on the train and an activity table with much to choose from. The party hosted 20 MDBGC members and many more from St. Louis area Cardinals Care communities.
