The Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club comes from humble beginnings, founded under a shade tree in 1960 by two neighborhood baseball coaches, Martin Luther Mathews and the late Hubert “Dickey” Ballentine. From a small storefront of 30 boys, the Club has grown to serve more than 20,000 young men and women, ages 5-18, in a 50-mile radius throughout the St. Louis-metropolitan area. The Club also acts as a meeting hub for various community, social and business organizations and as an outreach resource center for youth from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds.
The Club is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) United Way member agency and relies on the generosity of individuals just like you to fund a wholesome array of cultural, educational and sports programs for young people. As the needs of our community continue to grow, so does the financial resources required to support and sustain our programs well into the future. You can make a difference.
Initially, the Club was designed to provide structured recreational activities to neighborhood youths. Today, the Club’s goals are more focused and comprehensive and are aimed at:
- Emphasizing the three Rs (Respect, Restraint and Responsibility) through athletic competition and team-building.
- Building self-esteem, while allowing for personal growth, emphasizing the importance of becoming literate and educated citizens.
- Addressing problems stemming from teen idleness.
- Instilling the desire to lead productive lives and to become positive contributors and future leaders in the community.
Teaching moral, personal, social, cultural development and health & wellness practices.
Focusing on scholar-athletics, we have a new initiative, where you can Adopt or Mentor a Mathews-Dickey team!
The Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club mission is to produce physically active, well-educated and hopeful youth with families at the center of our efforts.
