Niele Ivey: Sports Advocate Award

Niele Ivey | Associate Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator – University of Notre Dame

Outstanding alumnus and high-achiever in the collegiate athletics field

“one of the finest point guards ever to wear the Notre Dame uniform”

The Sports Advocate Award is presented to Niele Ivey in recognition of her tremendous achievements as an outstanding alumnus of Mathews-Dickey and high-achiever in the collegiate athletics field. Her success story is one of several featured in co-founder Martin Mathews recently released biography “I Trust You With My Life”. Ivey will accept her award on stage at the Martin L. Mathews Awards Program & Benefit Concert during Mathews-Dickey’s Family Reunion Weekend.

Entering her 11th season at Notre Dame University, the Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator is the common link between all seven of the school’s Final Four appearances (five as a coach, two as a player) and works closely with the development of the Fighting Irish point guards, while serving as the program’s remarkable recruiter. The University’s website even refers to Ivey as “one of the finest point guards ever to wear the Notre Dame uniform”. A former All-America point guard at Notre Dame and a five-year WNBA veteran, Niele Ivey has brought her considerable experience to bear on the Fighting Irish floor generals, most recently taking Lindsay Allen under her wing and helping the Mitchellville, Maryland, native to become a two-time honorable-mention All-American.

Since Ivey joined Notre Dame, she has helped the Fighting Irish post a 283-44 (.865) record, including five NCAA Women’s Final Four berths, four NCAA title game appearances and nine conference championships (five regular season, four tournaments split between the BIG EAST and ACC) causing Notre Dame to be ranked among the top 20 in the nation in scoring offense, assists and assist/turnover ratio six times. In addition to her achievements in player development with protégés like former two-time consensus first-team All-Americans Skylar Diggins and Jewell Loyd. She has helped Notre Dame attract top-10 incoming classes each of the past seven years, including top-five groups during the last five seasons (incoming classes of 2012-16). It was no surprise when Ivey was chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division I National Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2015-16.
